Persian Literature as (a) World Literature

Controlling Question: The usage(s) of and relationship(s) between the terms "Persian" and "Iranian" in current discourse—literary, cultural, political and otherwise—is a complex one, with each term simultaneously concealing and revealing highly contested and politicized positions regarding the nature of cultural, national and personal identities. The literature produced within the space(s) defined by these positions dates back to at least the 10th century, when Ferdowsi composed the Shahnameh using almost no Arabic loan words, an act of literary subversion that almost single-handedlyresurrected Persian as a literary language in the face of what had been Arabic's dominance. Today, the literature being produced within these spaces is written in (or translated into) many languages other than Persian, in countries far beyond the borders of the ancient Persian Empire, and by people whose connections to whatever is defined by the terms "Persian" and/or "Iranian" are anything but monolithic. Is it fair, then, to call this literature a world literature? What are the implications of doing so? What are the implications of choosing not to do so?

Co-sponsored by Persian Arts Festival (www.persianartsfestival.org), a special edition of ArteNews (www.arteeast.org/artenews/arteeast-artenews.html), the online journal published by ArteEast (www.arteeast.org), will be devoted to this question. We are soliciting submissions in the following categories:

  • Essays of 1,000-1,500 words in response to any aspect of the controlling question.

  • Essays of 1,000-1,500 words that address any other aspect of Persian/Iranian literature.

  • Poetry: 3-5 poems, including translations from any historical period, that fall within the space(s) defined by the controlling question. The poems need not have been written originally in English, but any non-English poems must be accompanied by strong, literary, English translations. Translators must show proof of the right to publish the translations.

  • Short stories or memoirs, using the same guidelines as for poetry, of between 1,000-1,5000 words.

ALL PAPER SUBMISSIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 1, 2007

Please send submissions to:

“Weaving the Common Thread: Perspectives from Persian Artists”

Persian Arts Festival (PAF) is an arts and cultural organization whose mission is to present events that bring the magnificence and diversity of Persian culture to the community at large. Our goal is to support and showcase emerging and established artists, the voices and visionaries of today, while at the same time honoring the rich literary and artistic tradition from which contemporary Persian culture draws so much of its energy. To accomplish this goal, PAF produces a series of events that incorporate, but are not limited to, fine art, music, film, comedy, educational workshops, panel discussions and family-focused activities celebrating Persian traditions and holidays, including one of the most defining aspects of the culture, cuisine.

We are seeking emerging and established fine artists to share their voice and perspective as a Persian artist.  Please see more information and submission guidelines below.

Thank you and best of luck,
Pooneh Maghazehe
Art Director, Persian Arts Festival

Theme Description:  Being of Persian descent and living in the United States inevitably can have tremendous impact on the evolution of ones internal lens, and inevitably, ones global perspective.  A unique ability is harvested, like many Americans of immigrant heritage, to use the geographical distance from their country of heritage to reflect on the effect of Middle Eastern heritage to one’s inner character and/or the international community.  In essence, we are asking for artists to submit work that offers insight to experiences that have shaped their views and how Persian lineage has colored their lives.

Submission Guidelines:
Send work samples via email if possible and all other submissions, such as film, music & portfolios to the address below. Please note that material submitted will not be returned.

  • 5-10 images of work related to show theme (digital images should be in jpg format, no more than 300dpi and no more than 2MB)
  • List of work submitted along with description (i.e. title, dimensions, medium, date)
  • Biography, updated resume and short artist’s statement
  • List of past shows (if applicable)
  • Please label all entries clearly with name and title of entry

Judging & Notification:
Judging and notification will take place by June 30, 2007.  The jury will be comprised of artists in the fine arts, media and textile designers in the New York metropolitan area.

Evaluative Criteria:

  • Artistic quality
  • Conceptual strength
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medium applied
  • Appropriateness for diverse public audiences

CLOSED
ALL ART SUBMISSIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 2, 2007
